Nearly 300 ECU staff, students and members of the community helped celebrate International Women's Day on Monday, 8 March by attending the second annual Edith Cowan Memorial Lecture.
The 2010 Lecture, entitled 'Equality of opportunity for all: A personal perspective,'' was delivered by Professor Donna Cross, ECU's Foundation Professor of Child and Adolescent Health in the School of Exercise, Biomedical and Health Science. Professor Cross is also the Director of the University's Child Health Promotion Research Centre.
Professor Cross provided an engaging and thought provoking address on how violence against women affects children and also outlined individual and community approaches to preventing violence. Professor Cross's presentation was especially appropriate given the United Nations theme for International Women's Day ''Equality for All,'' the University's namesake Edith Dircksey Cowan dedication to equal rights and ECU's strong commitment to education.
The Edith Cowan Memorial Lecture was organised by the Women@ECU initiative which is sponsored by Professor Brenda Cherednichenko, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Engagement, Equity and Indigenous); Dr Susan King, Executive Director, Governance and Planning and Professor Colleen Hayward, Head of Kurongkurl Katitjin.
If you'd like to know more about the Women@ECU Initiative, please visit the website or if you would like to be added to the mailing list for future events, please contact Harbhani Bansal.
For staff interested in hearing more from Donna, she will be presenting a session at Mount Lawley on Thursday, 18 March and Joondalup on Friday, 19 March for the staff wellness activity, 'Up Close and Personal'. This is the first of a series of lunchtime sessions where you can have an informal chat with inspiring people across ECU. Register your interest through the Staff Kiosk.
