Edith Cowan University's (ECU) Fogarty Learning Centre has launched a research project in partnership with the West Coast District Education Office and ten schools in the Clarkson area to support literacy for at-risk students.
The project, funded by ECU, the West Coast District Education Office and five of the schools will offer training and support for schools to implement innovative intervention strategies for students not achieving key reading milestones in Year 2.
The program was officially launched at the professional development workshop, held at the Joondalup Reception Centre on Friday, 19 February.
Achieving reading milestones in the early years of schooling is critical for success in school and later life, and this project puts ECU's latest evidence-based research and strategies into practise in ten schools.
Associate Professor Deslea Konza from ECU's Fogarty Learning Centre says that it's important for schools and teachers to have the right skills to assist students in developing reading skills at such a critical stage of development.
"In WA we are doing well with our mainstream and high-achieving students, but we need to focus on developing the literacy of our lower achieving kids."
Nicole Duckworth, a participating teacher from Merriwa Primary School, said she's excited by the program and keen to get started.
"I'm looking forward to seeing my students build their reading skills, and especially their confidence in reading, which is so crucial to building literacy," she said.
"Literacy opens up doors, enriches children's lives and prepares them for school and university," said ECU Vice-Chancellor Professor Kerry Cox.
"The Fogarty Learning Centre shows our commitment to teaching and research inspired by engagement and partnerships and we take every opportunity to link with those in the many communities we establish to serve."
