The author of the book 'Palestinian Lawyers and Israeli Rule: Law and Disorder in the West Bank' was guest lecturer at a special seminar conducted in the Faculty of Arts today (13 May).
Professor George Bisharat is Professor of Law at Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco. The topic of his address was 'Boycotting Israeli Apartheid: Practical and Ethical Questions'.
Professor Bisharat described the growing international movement in support of boycotts, divestment and sanctions (BDS) that seeks to compel Israel to comply with international law.
He argued that BDS represented a non-violent, morally defensible and effective strategy for positive change.
Professor Bisharat paid particular attention to the ethical questions surrounding the academic and cultural aspects of the boycott movement.
He stressed that there was no justification for exempting Israeli academic institutions from the general boycott of Israeli goods and services.
