Renting a house can be stressful when you are not sure of your rights and responsibilities.
There are lots of forms to sign, legal terminology and talk of the rights of tenants, landlords and real estate agents.
However there are people who can help guide you through the experience of signing, managing and ending a lease and who can make sure your rights as a tenant are respected.
Quick facts
- A landlord cannot refuse your rental application or evict you because of your religion, race, marital status, gender, age, disabilities, sexual preference or because you have children.
- Make sure you get a 'Condition Report' at the beginning of your tenancy which describes the condition of each room before you move in. That way there is no arguments at your final inspection about existing damage to the house!
- Never sign a blank form or a form you don't understand, you always have the right to go away and read any agreement you have to sign, or to get advice before you sign.
